SPIELBERG
SAID TO HAVE FOUND THE EXACT "LOOK" FOR MINORITY
REPORT
THURSDAY OCTOBER 28 1999 12:30PMCT
I could’ve sworn that I
saw a tumbleweed roll past this site a few days ago. Where
have all the Minority Report news gone? With Spielberg buying
up book after book, internet technologies, and still winning
awards for Saving Private Ryan along with prepping for his SPR
DVD/video release to the consumer market next month, where
does he find the time to deal with MR? That could be a reason
as to why we are getting very little news on the status of MR.
Luckily, last night the silence was broken and a fellow reader
of the site sent in the following information concerning a
possible “look” for MR. One quick note, if anyone has any
information concerning MR that is not listed on this site,
feel free to email
me so I can post it for us Philip K. Dick and MR fans!
Hi. I'm a PKD
enthusiast who's been keeping an eye out for news on Minority
Report. Thought this small piece from today's (27th Oct)
London Evening Standard might interest you:
-----------------------------
The influence of Lord
Irvine of Lairg truly does rival that of his great
predecessor, Cardinal Wolsey. Not only does Derry Irvine's
writ run large in Whitehall, but his name even resonates in
the film studios of Hollywood.
Steven Spielberg joined
a tour of the Lord Chancellor's opulent apartments in the
Palace of Westminster recently, and was so taken by a
collection of 18th century etchings depicting nightmarish
scenes of incarceration by Giovanni Piranesi that he
immediately ordered a colleague to procure a book of the
artists work.
"He said the sense
of foreboding and menace in the pictures was exactly the
atmosphere he was hoping to recreate in his next film"
reveals Jerry Lewis, a Spielberg associate. The film director
has now sent copies of the book, entitled Carceri
d'Inventione, to his set designers...It is not known in which
of Spielberg's current projects the Piranesi-esque work will
feature, although the director is working on Minority Report,
a futuristic Orwellian tale at the moment.
---------------
Intrigued I checked out
some sites for examples of Piranesi's etchings. This was one
of the best and quickest loading:
http://sunsite.auc.dk/cgfa/piranesi/index.html Intriguing
stuff. Some of these images put me in mind of Dick's
descriptions of the 'Monkey House' in which the three sibling
precogs are 'incarcerated' in the original short story.
Keep up the good work,
Regards,
Simon Mahoney.
SCOTT FRANK DISCUSSES
LATEST PRODUCTION STATUS
MONDAY OCTOBER 11, 1999 10:00AMCT Aint
it cool news
Meanwhile, the whole
shooting delays in Australia on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2...
well... they are affecting another shooting schedule as well.
Many of you may remember that Moriarty has been claiming that MINORITY
REPORT was a possibly dead film. Meanwhile, the official
line has been that they just chose to push back shooting on
the film to sometime at the start of the new year. Well...
While running around up
here at the AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL and HEART OF TEXAS WRITER'S
CONVENTION, I have run into Scott Frank, screenwriter of OUT
OF SIGHT, as well as the upcoming MINORITY REPORT
(and Gary Ross' production of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE
FACTORY). Now, Scott, Callie Khouri (screenwriter of THELMA
& LOUISE) and I were all talking about the current
fear of violence in cinema, the violence tax, MPAA, Culture
Committee and other halloween scare stories, when Scott begins
to talk to me about the site, and in specific... the whole
story about Moriarty's death decree upon the project.
Now... Moriarty's
sources... which I am well aware of... were very correct when
they talked about mass firings from the design team and film
staff, etc. But... what they didn't tell Moriarty was that the
lead Production Designer... well, was still onboard working.
And that Scott was still working. That FORD (yes, the car
company) was in the mist of creating some AMAZING vehicles for
this film. Ya see...
In some ways... this is
all MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2's fault. The same reason that
Doug Ray Scott had to leave X-MEN... well, Tom Cruise
was stuck on MI2. Since Tom and Steven are bound as a package
to the project, they simply decided to push back the project.
A blessing for Scott Frank because he still needed time to
finish the script. In fact, just 2 weeks ago, Tom Cruise read
the script for the first time. This movie is going to be a
radically different future from the ones we have previously
seen.
Scott
says everything is going ok on the project, he's happy and it
will come together. So put aside those fears. He also told me
that the script he's written was a page 1 rewrite, using none
of the original draft which I and others have read. He then
described how this future is the one envisioned by quite a few
of today's scientists and futurists. The t-shirted pregnant
woman, where the t-shirt has a constant sonogram image of the
child. Recently, there have been the articles about chemical
computers.... you paint a wall and it then becomes a
television screen, or monitor. A very interesting a cool
project from the sounds of it. I can not wait to see Spielberg
working in this type of universe. Let's hope everything works
great for him.
UK
MAGAZINE SLIPS IN A PAGE FROM THE MINORITY REPORT STORYBOARD!!
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 1999 1:56PMCT
Nick
"Moviz", which is a UK
film magazine based in London has somehow slipped in what
looks to be an interesting looking page from the Minority
Report storyboard. John Reign is the man who apparently
created this board. I have a few copied pages from Sherman
Labby's storyboard on Blade Runner that I bought a while back
and have come to the conclusion that one can notice the similarities
in style between Labby's storyboard to Reign's style in
Minority Report perhaps suggesting that the overall tone of
the movie will be dark and gloomy. NOTE: A few emails have
told me that Spielberg IS INDEED very much attached to the
project. It's starting to cook around DreamWorks and hopefully
we'll be seeing more scoops and images as this pre-production
stage progresses. Stay tuned.
Cate
May Join Cruise in Spielberg Film
Friday
September 24, 1999 2:30PMCT Variety
Cate Blanchett,
who thrilled audiences in Elizabeth, is turning
momentarily from period pieces to a trio of thrillers.
The regal
Australian actress may co-star with Tom Cruise in Steven
Spielberg's sci-fi thriller Minority Report. The
Hollywood Reporter says that the actress, whose turn as
Queen Elizabeth netted her a well-deserved Oscar nomination,
has not yet received a formal offer.
Minority
Report, which has been
delayed, may also star Matt Damon as Cruise's brother. Dharma
& Greg's Jenna Elfman has also been mentioned to
co-star in the film.
Blanchett's
already wrapped The Talented Mr. Ripley, based on the
Patricia Highsmith novel about an unscrupulous American who
resorts to murder to keep himself in the European high life.
Blanchett joins Gwyneth Paltrow (who stole the Best Actress
Oscar from her), Damon, and Jude Law in the Anthony Minghella
film, which opens Dec. 24.
She's also
attached to another thriller for A Simple Plan director
Sam Raimi, which will start shooting in January. Titled The
Gift, it's about an Arkansas woman with ESP, who gets
entangled in a murder mystery. The script is by Arkansas
native Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, who penned the
taut neo-noir One False Move.
Her name has also
been rumored in connection with two more period films: The
Man Who Cried, which will star Johnny Depp and Christina
Ricci; and The White Hotel, for which nearly every
working actress has been mentioned, including Kate Winslet,
Juliette Binoche, Natasha Richardson, and fellow Aussie Nicole
Kidman.
Blanchett
starred in this year's Oscar Wilde comedy An Ideal Husband
and followed in Meryl Streep's steps by taking on David Hare's
play Plenty for the London stage
MINORITY
REPORT STILL ON!!
TUESDAY
SEPTEMBER 14, 1999 9:40AMCT Nick
Rumors of Minority
Report's demise have been greatly exaggerated, it seems.
Cinescape Online was in contact with a spokesperson for the
production today and learned that Minority Report has
not been canceled. It's ju
st on hiatus, suggested the rep. Shooting has been pushed back
another month (from January to February) to make more time for
further re-writes to the script. As far as the spokesperson
knew, Scott Frank was still the writer on the project. The
most recent Exhibitor Relations feature release schedule lists
a November 17, 2000 release date for the project, though the
rep could not comment on whether that remains the targeted
opening date.
Some doubts had also
previously been cast on the death rumors last week when Steven
Spielberg commented on the property as he brushed aside talk
of his taking on Stanley Kubrick's A.I.
The DreamWorks/Fox
co-production will be directed by Steven Spielberg with Tom
Cruise, Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett reportedly starring.
Based on a Philip K. Dick short story of the same name, Minority
Report follows a police officer (Cruise) who heads up a
special "pre-crime" division of the Washington D.C.
force in the year 2080. The basic function of the pre-crime
division is to use the aid of psychics to arrest murderers
before they commit their crimes. In a classic Dick twist, the
lead character has the tables turned on him when he is accused
of a future crime. Our hero must find out what led to the
infraction and somehow prevent it from occurring before the
pre-crime division tracks him down.
